The English Faculty teaches English Language and Literature in mixed
ability classes to all pupils at Kingshill
School. Content and
resources have been modeled to meet the requirements of the Renewed
Secondary Framework for English and pupils follow a varied and challenging modular
course. The faculty tracks each pupil’s development in a wide range
of English skills through each Key Stage. Indeed, every pupil is given
specific targets to allow for high levels of progress to be made.
In each of
Years 7-9 pupils study a range of literature ranging from pre-twentieth
century writing and Shakespeare to 21st century media and
non-fiction texts. Pupils are also taught how to express their own
individual ideas in a variety of styles and for a wide range of audiences.
Speaking and listening skills are also developed through an extensive range
of oral presentations, discussions and role play tasks. Lessons incorporate a array of innovative teaching and learning techniques
as well as making use of excellent resources and ICT facilities.
English in
Years 10 and 11 builds on the skills acquired in years 7-9. Students currently
follow the A.Q.A. English and English Literature G.C.S.E. courses, studying
a wide range of texts chosen carefully to suit the interests of the class.
Indeed, the department takes pride in setting tasks that are lively,
enjoyable and relevant to each candidate in order to engage and stretch
them to their full potential. The syllabuses require pupils to take
a final examination as well as submitting a coursework folder.
Extra
Curricular Activities
In efforts
to raise standards of literacy across the school, the faculty also
coordinates a variety of whole school literacy projects and competitions
such as ‘The Times Spelling Bee’; cross curricular writing and
educational visits; creative writing competitions and reading initiatives.
An addition to Kingshill's extra-curricular
activities is the annual Public Speaking Competition held in the Summer
Term. All pupils in years 8-10 take part in the first round and finalists
perform their talks formally to an audience of Year 7 pupils and a panel of
judges. A prize is awarded to the best speaker in each year. Winners have
also taken part in inter-school competitions.
