WHAT WILL A PUPIL LEARN BY TAKING THIS SUBJECT?
The aim of the course is to build on pupils' understanding of the reasons why society has changed over time, leading to a greater perception of the world we live in today.
By studying GCSE History pupils will develop their investigative, evaluative and analytical skills thus enabling them to form opinions and make critical judgements on evidence and information presented to them. The skills developed will be useful in the study of other subjects.
The History course includes the study of the development of medicine through time, the rise of Nazi Germany and the study of the contemporary issue of the conflict in Northern Ireland. This will provide pupils with a greater awareness of some of the factors that have shaped today's society as well as increasing their knowledge and understanding of current issues and conflicts. This will enable pupils to identify the rights and responsibilities they have as individuals and the role they play in society as a whole. Hopefully pupils will also gain a greater empathy and tolerance towards other groups in society.
This subject can be studied in combination with any of the other Humanities subjects Geography and Religious Studies.
HOW DOES THE SUBJECT HELP AS A QUALIFICATION FOR FUTURE COURSES OR CAREERS AND/OR MEET OTHER NEEDS SUCH AS LEISURE/ENJOYMENT ETC?
This course will allow pupils to progress to an advanced level in History. The study of History can lead to a potential career in law, local government, journalism, media and arts, archaeology and politics.
The skills developed during the course would also help in the study of Geography, Sociology, Politics and Religious Studies at a higher level.
