Aims/Objectives for Year 9

 

To continue the study of a modern language, while consolidating previous work.

 

The skills thus defined are: - Listening, Speaking, reading and Writing.

 

Pupils are set according to their ability in languages.  Set 1 out of 3 will study an equal amount (timetabled lessons) of French, German and Spanish.  Set 2 out of 3 will study an equal amount (timetabled lessons) of French and Spanish.  Set 3 out of 3 will study Spanish as a single Modern Foreign Language.

Course Description

 

Generally, a topic is introduced so that pupils hear and can speak French before they read and write about it.  Although the course is topic-based, the importance of grammar is emphasised.
 

FRENCH

 GERMAN

·         Learning about German speaking towns/cities

·         Talking about the weather

·         Places in town and transport

·         Asking for and giving directions

·         Buying food and drink at the “Schnellimbiss”

·         Talking about future holiday plans

·         Talking about previous holidays

·         Ordering food in a café

·         Shopping

·         The dative case

·         Talking about TV viewing habits

·         Understanding an interview with a young sportsperson

·         Talking about a school trip

·         Talking about illnesses and injuries

·         Discussing healthy and unhealthy eating

 

 SPANISH

·         Talking about activities you enjoy

·         Describing friends

·         Understanding nationalities and Spanish speaking countries

·         Talking about places in the town

·         Talking about TV programmes and giving opinions

·         Talking about films and comparing them

·         Inviting friends out and making excuses

·         Describing past holidays

·         Talking about food and shopping for food

·         Eating at a restaurant

·         Talking about clothes and fashion

·         Taking a trip to Argentina

 

Range of Activities - French
Pupils will work in pairs, small groups and full groups, as well as participating in self-supported study.  

Homework Requirements
There will be one homework per subject per week.  This could involve learning vocabulary or activities based on speaking, reading or writing. All homework is equally important.

National Curriculum Assessment Procedures

Work is assessed throughout lessons, but formal assessments take place at the end of each module of work.

Range of Activities - German

Pupils will work in pairs, small groups and full groups, as well as participating in self-supported study.    Pupils are encouraged to form pen friendships and take part in the bi-annual Exchange visit to Itzehoe.  Pupils also develop reading skills through individual reading schemes.  The Graded Objectives scheme is used to help develop speaking skills.

Homework Requirements
There will be 2 homeworks per week.  Generally, this will mean one learning homework, and one other homework based on speaking, reading or writing.  Both homeworks are equally important.
