LEARNING SUPPORT – YEAR 7

Aims

• To assist pupils transfer successfully from Primary to Secondary School.
• To provide help for those pupils assessed to need support in lessons
• To offer help with homework.
• To build confidence and the skills needed to succeed at Secondary School.

Support

• Support is provided in lessons with Teaching Assistants aiding subject teachers to meet the needs of all the pupils in the class.
• At lunchtimes help with homework is on offer in the Learning Support Base and on three afternoons after school a homework club in held in the Base.
• The Learning Support Base is stocked with computers, reference books, a reading library and the subject text books as well as a range of games.

Course Description

One lesson per week is identified as a focus on Literacy Skills within the English course experienced by everyone. The pupils follow a carefully structured Progress Intervention course designed to boost literacy skills. The course is modular and involves a range of grammar and punctuation skills using extracts from fiction and non-fiction texts.

Pupils are taught how to write clearly and accurately using a variety of structures from Persuasion to Description.

Homework

• To learn spelling list every week.
• To read regularly and meet their individual reading target.

Assessment

All year 7 entrants are tested for reading, spelling and cognitive ability and where a need is identified, help is provided by the Learning Support Team. Small reading groups are run every day with adult supervision. Reassessment of skills takes place in the Summer term. Progress tests are also sat in the Summer Term.
