GCSE Mathematics

The Mathematics Department
In the Mathematics Faculty we seek to provide enjoyable lessons where pupils are encouraged to learn through a variety of teaching styles in order to extend their mental, written and practical mathematical skills. In this atmosphere of positive encouragement we believe pupils develop the confidence so essential for success in this subject.

We fully support the objectives of the Secondary Framework at Key Stage 3. Mathematics is taught using an up-to-date range of texts with an emphasis on student/teacher interaction and appropriate use of ICT, including interactive whiteboards, in a way that provides both challenge and reward.

Pupils are placed into groups according to ability at the start of Year 7 and their progress is constantly monitored to ensure they are kept in the most appropriate class. We aim to teach every pupil according to their ability and ensure they are stretched as much as possible.

Whilst the development of strong number skills is considered paramount, the sensible use of calculators forms an integral part of our course and we therefore require that each pupil possesses one. Any member of the Mathematics Faculty will be pleased to advise on a suitable purchase and the Friends of Kingshill School are able to supply them at a discount.

We run a number of clubs and trips to promote the learning of Mathematics and these have been very popular with pupils. Year 8 and 10 pupils are regularly entered for the "Maths Challenge", a national award for able pupils. Visits to colleges and universities provide the opportunity for pupils to experience Mathematics outside the curriculum and trips to Mathematical workshops and Maths trails are enjoyable days out.

The Mathematics Faculty are always pleased to talk to parents about their child's progress and positively encourage parental involvement. We will endeavour to keep you informed if there are any problems but will also be in contact if your child is performing particularly well - something that all pupils with praise and encouragement are capable of doing.
