Text Box: COURSE DESCRIPTION 
 
The curriculum for Mathematics is divided into three Attainment Targets, all of which are covered throughout the course: 
 
A0l:        Recall and use their knowledge of the prescribed content
A02:       Select and apply mathematical methods in a range of contexts 
A03:       Interpret and analyse problems and generate strategies to solve them 
 
Pupils in Year 10 are put into sets according to ability, based on previous performance. 
Each group works towards one of the two tiers of entry: 
                      Foundation Tier    allows grades C, D, E, F and G
                      Higher Tier           allows grades A*, A, B, C  and D
RANGE OF ACTIVITIES 

The main focus of the course is on traditional teacher-led learning, with an emphasis on application and problem-solving. Homework is an integral part of the course and pupils can expect to be set a homework task after every lesson where appropriate. Numeracy skills are essential and will be regularly tested - although a calculator is essential for every pupil. 
WHAT WILL A PUPIL LEARN BY TAKING THIS SUBJECT?

The course covers the Mathematics Attainment Targets as set out above. In addition, pupils will also learn how to 
1) - work through problems in a positive and logical way
2) - relate their Mathematical abilities to real life situations
3) - improve their ICT skills 
HOW DOES THE SUBJECT HELP AS A QUALIFICATION FOR FUTURE COURSES OR CAREERS AND/OR MEET OTHER NEEDS SUCH AS LEISURE/ENJOYMENT ETC? 
Mathematics GCSE is a prerequisite for many courses in Further and Higher Education. In addition to this. prospective employers place a high value on the Mathematics grade achieved.
