MATHEMATICS - Year 7
Teacher in charge - Mr. S. Hastings
Aims
To build on the skills, concepts and knowledge developed at Key Stage 2.
To involve pupils in activities which will nurture confidence and enthusiasm for Mathematics.
To give all pupils the opportunity to develop their potential to the full.
The Year 7 course has been designed to develop Numeracy skills and to encourage correct, precise and orderly Mathematics. In order to ensure that all pupils have access to an appropriate curriculum, the faculty use differentiated schemes of work, based on the "Impact Maths" and "New National Framework" series, to cater for all abilities.
Grouping
At the beginning of the year, pupils are placed into sets based on their Key Stage 2 test results and other relevant information. Progress is continuously monitored and movement between sets can be made at any time. This allows every pupil to be taught according to their ability and ensures that they are extended as much as possible.
Following National Numeracy Strategy guidelines, a small homework (about 5 to 10 minutes) is set after each lesson, as appropriate. If none has been set, the expectation is that pupils review their work. Where necessary, longer pieces of homework are set and pupils are given an appropriate length of time to complete the task.
Exercise books are regularly marked to assist pupils' progress. At the end of each topic a short test is given to ensure that understanding is complete. Approximately every term a diagnostic test is given to monitor progress and compare results with other pupils within the year group.
