A
basic introduction to the learning of a modern foreign language in line with
the requirements of the National Curriculum. The skills thus defined are:

-
- Writing
Generally a topic
is introduced so that pupils hear and can speak German before they read and
write it.
|
Term 1 |
The work is
specifically aimed at building confidence in German. Pupils are introduced to
the sounds and alphabet of the German language and to the concepts of gender
and register. Work is begun on dictionary skills. This work is covered
through the topics of greetings, names, ages, numbers, alphabet, classroom
vocabulary, dates, school subjects, asking and
giving the time. |
|
Term 2 |
Pupils continue
to talk about themselves particularly in terms of their family and pets. They will also learn how to talk about what
they eat and drink and what they wear to school. Grammar work includes plurals and er/sie forms of the present tense. |
|
Term 3 |
Pupils learn how
to express their opinions through the topics of hobbies
. Other topics include understanding
short texts, arranging a date with a friend and favourite
things. Grammar work includes word
order, verbs and gern, and asking questions. |
Pupils will work
in pairs and small groups as well as full class. They are encouraged to form penfriendships with a view to taking part in the German
Exchange to Itzehoe when they are older. Graded
schemes in speaking and reading are used to support classwork.
Two homeworks, each of approximately 20 minutes will be set.
Regular learning of vocabulary and phrases are vital if progress is to be made.
Teachers will continue to assess throughout all lessons but formal assessment will take place at the end of each section of work.
