We aim to provide the
linguistic skills and necessary background information needed to communicate
effectively in a variety of defined settings within specific topic areas.
The linguistic skills are
defined as listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and learning skills of a
more general application are promoted too (e.g. memorising, drawing of
inferences, using a dictionary etc).

study of a modern language, in line with the requirements of the National
Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages. The skills
thus defined are:

Writing
German learners in Year 8
fall into two categories - (i) those who continue
from Year 7 with German as their first Modern Foreign Language (MFL 1) and (ii)
those who are starting German as their second Modern Foreign Language (MFL 2),
which they will study alongside French, to GCSE level.
The aim is to

Term 1 |
The work is specifically
aimed at building confidence in German. Pupils are introduced to the sounds
and alphabet of the German language and to the concepts of gender and
register. This work is covered through
the topics of greetings, names, ages, numbers, alphabet, classroom
vocabulary, dates, school subjects, asking and
giving the time. |

Term 2 |
Pupils continue to talk
about themselves particularly in terms of their family and pets. They will also learn how to talk about what
they eat and drink and what they wear to school. Grammar work includes plurals and er/sie forms of the present tense. |

Term 3 |
Pupils learn how to
express their opinions through the topics of hobbies
. Other topics include understanding
short texts, arranging a date with a friend and favourite things. Grammar work includes word order, verbs and
gern, and asking questions. |
Pupils will
work in pairs, small groups and full groups, as well as participating in
self-supported study. Pupils are
encouraged to form penfriendships and take part in
the annual Exchange visit to Itzehoe. Pupils also develop reading skills through
individual reading schemes. The Graded
Objectives scheme is used to help develop speaking skills.
There will be 1 homework per week.
This could involve learning vocabulary or activities based on speaking,
reading or writing. All homeworks are equally
important.
Work is
