Kingshill School became a Specialist Sports College in September 2002.
The work of the faculty in developing links with partner schools, feeder primary schools and the wider community has grown to form a major part in developing sport and the delivery of Physical Education. As a Sports College, the PE faculty has demonstrated a commitment to improve the subject delivery, participation and ICT links. In addition to this there is a commitment to an individual approach to develop the potential of pupils through a flexible PE curriculum and groupings.
Physical Education is in the core curriculum. In years 7 to 9 each pupil has 3 x 50 minute lessons per week. These lessons aim to provide a broad, balanced and relevant programme for each pupil. They include Rugby, Soccer, Netball, Hockey, Golf, Badminton, Basketball, Gymnastics, Dance, Athletics, Cricket, Tennis, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, and Rounders. In year 10 pupils study Physical Education for 3 x 50 minute lessons per week. All students follow the accredited J.S.L.A. course and a single lesson of H.R.F. as well as a choice of activities from:
Aerobics, Dance, Outdoor and Adventurous Activities Golf, Trampolining, Team Sports - Rugby, Football, Lacrosse, Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Cricket, Athletics, Tennis, Rounders, Ultimate Frisbee, Softball, Volleyball
In addition pupils may choose GCSE PE for an additional 3 x 50 minute lessons. This course gives pupils the opportunity to study the subject in more depth. The GCSE syllabus integrates the theoretical and practical elements of the study of physical activity. Course content includes Health-Related Fitness and Sport within Society. In year 11, 2 x 50 minute lessons per week are timetabled in order to make use of the Cotswold Leisure Centre, Simone’s Fitness Club and South Cerney Golf Course. These facilities enable pupils to take part in Badminton, Squash, Trampolining, Gym Work and Golf. In addition to this all pupils receive a H.R.F. lesson every fortnight. Within these units pupils will have the opportunity to undertake National Governing Body award schemes or coaching awards which they can utilise in the local community.
There is an extensive extra-curricular programme including athletics, rounders, basketball, cricket, soccer, rugby, tennis, gymnastics, dance, cross-country, netball, hockey, tae-kwon-do, kendo, conditioning and ballet. Teams play matches after school and on some Saturdays. There are also regular house matches which the majority of pupils have the opportunity to participate in within the school day, including Sports Day, Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Rugby and Football. The school has an excellent reputation in sport. Pupils have been selected for district and county in a variety of sports including Cross-Country, Netball, Hockey, Rugby, Tennis, Athletics, Cricket, Football, Badminton, Sailing, Judo and Golf. The school participates in many national sporting events including: Bazuka Swimming Championship, TSB Athletics, ESFA U/14 National Football Competition, ESAA National Cross Country, HSBC Tennis Leagues, Daily Mail U/15 Rugby. The Physical Education department has forged strong links within the community in the following sports: Netball, Hockey, Tennis, Rugby, Cricket, Athletics, Dance and Football.
