COURSE EXPECTATIONS
Pupils Studying the GCSE PE course will be
expected to have a commitment to sport in PE lessons as well as being involved
in extra-curricular teams, clubs and sporting events. Although this is a
practical course (60%) pupils studying GCSE PE should be aware of the importance
placed on the theory work and its application to their practical performance.
As part of this course all pupils will need to
plan, complete and evaluate a sport specific training programme related to one
of their chosen sports as part of their coursework component.
WHAT FURTHER EDUCATION AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH STUDYING GCSE PE?
Pupils who undertake the GCSE PE course will have a solid
grounding in a variety of different sporting roles and Physical Education
topics, which can be studied further within Key Stage 5. These include aspects
of Sport Science, Sports Coaching, Dance, BTEC Sport National Diploma, Community
Sports Leader Awards as well as
‘A’
Level Physical Education.
The leisure and sports related industries are
growth areas for future employment opportunities. The GCSE PE course provides an
excellent introduction to an expanding and increasingly specialised field.
WHAT WILL A PUPIL LEARN BY TAKING THIS SUBJECT?
In each practical activity, pupils will learn
tactics and strategies, rules and regulations, and how to analyse and improve
upon their own and others' performance. Pupils will also be assessed on
performing different roles in their chosen sports, to include the role of an
organiser, leader, coach, choreographer and official/referee.
Pupils will deal with Health Related Fitness that
will involve components of fitness, training methods, factors affecting
performance and health, diet, exercise and injury prevention.
Pupils will further their knowledge by learning about
opportunities and benefits of becoming involved in physical activities for
social and professional reasons. Other topics will include school influences,
cultural and international factors affecting sport, sponsorship, politics, media
and social trends. The psychology of sport will also be examined.
Pupils should be aware that although every attempt is made to teach through
practical sessions, at least 40%
of the time will be spent on the theoretical aspects of the
course. This will become a greater period of time after Christmas in year 11.
