Religious Education
Religious Education

The object of R.E. is not to convert or indoctrinate, but rather to educate pupils to an understanding of religion and its place in peoples' lives. Pupils will consider how people have answered questions about the meaning and purpose of existence and study the ways in which these answers shape attitudes to life.

In accordance with the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, emphasis will be placed on understanding the nature of religious beliefs and practices and their importance and influence in the lives of believers.

Pupils are also given opportunities to develop skills, concepts and attitudes which help to promote their spiritual awareness.

The courses as required by the 1988 Education Act "reflect the fact that the religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian, whilst taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain". Thus pupils study a number of different religious traditions and belief systems.

Pupils in years 7 to 9 receive one period of RE each week and are taught in mixed ability classes. In years 10 and 11 students can take a GCSE in Religious Education.

Religious Education also forms part of the core curriculum in year 10 and 11, with a GCSE short course followed by the majority.
